Police say James Hagerty was getting ready to cut the grass on a hill near a pond in the northeastern part of the park Monday. But the tractor slid back down the hill, went over an embankment and overturned.
Hagerty worked for New Castle County for five years as a special equipment operator until he retired in 2006. He returned in May as a seasonal employee.
County Executive Chris Coons says his death was a "huge loss" and said Hagerty was a "dedicated part of our family who worked so hard to serve the public."
