Call for Action Results: Tax Prep Problem Resolved

STEELMANTOWN, N.J. - August 3, 2011

That's what happened to Bruce Myers. Bruce is a retired state trooper, accustomed to helping others.

But this former cop needed a little help himself after getting a letter from the IRS stating he owed back taxes, penalties, and fines totaling nearly $5,000!

After Bruce got the letter, he called the tax preparation company he'd been using for more than a decade.

"She said, 'It's our mistake. We are responsible for the fines and penalties. You're responsible for the taxes,'" Bruce told Action News.

But he says getting the company to send him a reimbursement check proved impossible.

"A week goes by. I didn't hear anything. I call back and leave a message for her. They don't call me back. I called at least a dozen or more times," he said.

Finally Bruce contacted Call for Action, and within two weeks he got his money in the mail.

"They couldn't pay me fast enough," said Bruce. "I was amazed. I had tried for three months, four months almost, to get a call back. I couldn't even get a call back."

And Bruce says unlike the people at the tax preparation service, Bart, the CFA volunteer who handled his case, was very responsive.

"I was completely astounded that they were volunteers working there, not receiving a paycheck and putting in that much of an effort."

If you'd like to be a volunteer like Bart, please give us a call. You only have to give a few hours each week, and you'd be volunteering right at our 6abc building. We'd love to have you.
