Close call for Pa. State Trooper

BRISTOL, Pa. - August 24, 2011

Rt 413 is undergoing heavy construction, and police say speeding has been a problem.

Bristol Police, with the help of state police, set up a speed trap a short distance down the road.

It was there that police say the suspect sped 74 miles per hour in 40 mile an hour zone, and then took off, eventually crashing into the trooper.

Pennsylvania State Police say the trooper and the suspect had a near head-on collision, damaging both vehicles heavily.

"The suspect had just done a u-turn and was attempting to pass a box truck in the center lane," said Sgt. Brian Ianuzzi. "The trooper was coming in the opposite direction with his emergency lights and sirens activated."

The suspect, Steven Chiosso, of Maple Shade eventually pulled over about a hundred yards away, and police apprehended him.

Only Action News was there as Chiosso was taken into Bristol Police headquarters to be charged.

The trooper was treated at St. Mary's Medical Center. His name is not being released. He's a trooper in the Trevose Barracks.

"The trooper is being evaluated," said Sgt. Ianuzzi. "He is fine. He is talking. It is very minor injuries."

Police will conduct toxicology tests on Chiosso's blood. Investigators say they suspect he may have been high on drugs.

They also say suspicious items were found in the back of his Buick. The goods may have been stolen.
