Delaware County authorities originally charged 19-year-old Antonio White of Upper Darby with attempted homicide in the Nov. 1 shooting of 18-year-old Melvin Stewart.
Stewart was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he died a week later.
Authorities alleged in court documents that the defendant believed that the victim had stolen from him.
White was arraigned on charges of first- and third-degree murder, criminal homicide, assault, reckless endangering and weapons counts.
A preliminary hearing has been rescheduled for Jan. 9.
A listed number for White could not be found Saturday and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.
