PennDOT reduces speed on some Pa. roadways

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - January 21, 2012

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman Charles Metzger says 400 trucks have been out since midnight salting roads in Philadelphia and its suburbs in preparation for freezing rain expected at the tail end of Saturday's storm.

He says major roads are clear or have a bit of salt slush that will help when the freezing rain comes in.

Metzger says crews are using a new tow plow that extends behind a specialized dump truck to clear two lanes and a shoulder at the same time.

In east-central Pennsylvania, the speed limit has been reduced to 45 mph on Interstates 78 and 81 and on Route 22.
