Police: Illegal u-turn led to fatal crash on I-95

NEWARK, Del. - August 16, 2012

The crash happened at 3:20 a.m. in the southbound lanes in Newark, one mile south of the Delaware Toll Plaza.

Investigators say the driver of the tractor trailer, Abubaker Jamal, 35, of Columbus, OH, was making an illegal u-turn at an emergency crossover from the northbound lane into the southbound lane.

While making that turn, police say, Jamal drove the tractor trailer into the path of a box truck driven by Abodunrin Akinyanju, 30 of Greenbelt, MD.

Police say the box truck swerved right in an attempt to avoid the tractor trailer. The box truck then hit the right rear of the tractor trailer, then flipped over, causing the cargo section to separate from the truck and spilling the cargo of linen all over the roadway.

Akinyanju was trapped in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jamal was not injured.

I-95 southbound was completely closed for approximately 8 hours while the crash was investigated and the debris field cleared.

Troopers continue their investigation into this crash.
