New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will head to Washington Thursday to press the White House and Congress for money to help fund the state's recovery from Superstorm Sandy.

Christie has said the storm caused nearly $37 billion in damage.

Democrats on Capitol Hill on Wednesday said President Barack Obama plans to ask Congress for about $50 billion in additional emergency aid for states hit by the storm.

House Secretary Shaun Donovan told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee that the administration is still working on a request for a supplemental spending bill.

New Jersey, New York and Connecticut are together seeking about $83 billion in aid. Donovan described that figure as more of damage estimate, saying some damage might be covered by private insurance and other already-funded government programs.
