Philadelphia deputy mayor: City not liable for demo sites

PHILADELPHIA - June 19, 2013

The comment comes as City Council opens its investigation into the fatal June 5 building collapse that killed six people.

Council members are questioning a deputy mayor and the city's Licenses and Inspections commissioner.

Deputy Mayor Everett Gillison said Friday he and L&I Commissioner Carlton Williams must limit their comments because of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Gillison says the city is also not liable for contractors' work at private sites. Several survivors have sued the city over the collapse.

Records show the collapse site was inspected twice in February, and again in May following a citizen complaint that was deemed unfounded.
