Landon Nuss, 19, of Lititz, Pa., died after the fall around 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the Kardon/Atlantic Apartments.
Police say Nuss was in North Philadelphia visiting friends who attend Temple University.
He was smoking in a stairwell when he fell one story.
The incident is being investigated as an accident.
In a statement, a Temple spokesperson said "The university extends its sympathy to Nuss's family and friends."
