It happened at 4:30 a.m. Thursday in the 1500 block of South Warfield Street.
Police say the man in his 60s experienced a medical episode, lost control of his Jeep SUV and slammed into a utility pole.
The vehicle burst into flames.
Police were able to pull the victim from the SUV and get him to the hospital. He was listed in stable condition Thursday morning.
The crash knocked out power on the street.
PECO crews were on the scene making repairs.
