ELKINS PARK, Pa. (WPVI) -- Seniors are learning how to defend themselves at the KleinLife Center in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

The center is offering a series of self-defense classes in May and June and they're specifically geared towards older adults.

Dayna Glantz, the Program Director at KleinLife says, "I thought a self-defense class would be a fantastic thing. It gives our folks a sense of purpose. It's exciting, something new and fun and different."

The classes are taught by Michael McCormack, a Sensei with a fourth degree black belt in Japanese karate.

"What we're trying to do is use our strength against their weaknesses and look at the vulnerable areas that we all have," McCormack said.

He tells the class to target the knees, nose, eyes, throat and groin.

And, teaches the students the basic techniques for blocking, striking and escaping.

Sue Dallmer of Northeast Philadelphia said, "It makes you feel like you can do something. I enjoy that and I think yelling out does help."

Glantz says, "The second that you feel empowered, the second that you don't feel out of control, your life takes on new meaning."

"I hope to kick butt, yeah," added Dallmer.
