On video: Thief steals ATM, carts it off in trash can

READING, Pa. (WPVI) -- Police say a man tried an unusual tactic during the theft of an ATM - carting it off in a trash can.

Surveillance video showed the incident as it unfolded around 3:20 a.m. Sunday at Nueva Imagen Furniture Plus on North 9th Street in Reading, Pa.

A man apparently threw a brick through a window of a furniture to get at the machine.

He is seen pulling up the large blue trash can, then drags the ATM out of a store.

Struggling to lift the ATM, he tips the trash can over and pushes the ATM inside.

He is last seen forcefully dragging the can down the street.

However, police officers called to the scene saw the can being dragged into a home.

The officers knocked on the door and allegedly discovered John Nieves and Kathy Schadler inside - along with the ATM.

Both are now behind bars.
