BRISTOL TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- A 20-year-old suspected bank robber has been handed over to police by his mother.

It was Tuesday morning when surveillance cameras captured a young man robbing the TD Bank on Oxford Valley Road in Bristol Township.

Investigator say he gave the teller a very polite note reading, "Do not panic! I have a gun put $400 in this envelope and I'll be on my way. Nobody will get hurt and I will report myself to the authorities in about 6 hours. Thank you."

It wasn't long after the surveillance photo was released through local and social media sites, the Bristol Township police received a call from the mother of the suspect now identified as Trevor Bergey of Levittown.

"[His mother] said, 'I don't know where he is, but he's a heroin addict, he's depressed over a recent breakup with a girlfriend, and he's suicidal. We're trying to find him,'" Bristol Township Acting Police Chief Ralph Johnson said.

Bergey was found a short time later at a local hospital.

"His intention, according to his mother, was to overdose with the heroin that he bought with that money. But that didn't happen," Johnson said.

The 20-year-old suspect was arraigned Wednesday morning and is now being held on $500,000 bail.

If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

Meanwhile, Chief Johnson says he applauds Bergey's family for doing the right thing.

"Parents often don't know what to do. A parent faced with that choice probably would choose to have their child incarcerated and know that they're safe rather than have them out there taking another dose of heroin," Johnson said.

With that said, we put the question to the public: If your child broke the law, and you knew about it, would you call the police?

A few people said no, but the vast majority said yes, for the benefit of the child.
