Reorganization credited for reducing crime in Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) -- The Camden County Police Department celebrated its second anniversary today.

395 police officers are assigned to the streets and sidewalks of Camden.

The city was once called one of the most dangerous in America.

But, Camden officials heralded the law enforcement reorganization for its effectiveness in reducing crime.

Statistics now show violent crime has dropped 18% and shootings are down 50% in a year's time.

Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr. said "the men and women of this department have made a measureable statistical impact in the community. The residents I meet walking down the street or at our community engagement events are pleased with the work being done in their neighborhoods."

Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson echoed those sentiments, saying "this police department follows a mission, which is to reduce crime and make our neighbors feel safe to walk down the street, go to the park and sit on their porch."

"Our officers are working hard to engage the community and are living by the ethos set forth by this organization, which is service before self. In addition, the men and women of this department are leading this city with strength and compassion," Thomson said.
