MARLBORO, N.J. -- The former mayor of a New Jersey suburb has admitted sexually abusing a child in Delaware.

Matthew Scannapieco pleaded guilty to continuous sexual abuse of a child, first-degree rape and unlawful sexual contact.

The 71-year-old faces up to life in prison when he's sentenced at New Castle Superior Court in Wilmington, Delaware, on Sept 4.

The Asbury Park Press reports Scannapieco told detectives the sexual acts occurred between 2006 and 2008.

Scannapieco had served as mayor of Marlboro Township from 1992 until 2003.

He was released from prison in 2010 following 21 months behind bars after he pleaded guilty in 2005 to tax evasion and accepting bribes to help win planning board approvals for six projects.
