BENSALEM, Pa. -- An 18-year-old has been convicted of vehicular homicide and involuntary manslaughter in the death of a Bensalem teenager who was struck as she walked to the school bus last year.
The Bucks County Courier Times reports that a Bucks County jury deliberated for about 3 hours before convicting Michael Shelly of all charges.
Prosecutors said the Bucks County Technical High School student acted recklessly on Dec. 17 when his 1984 Ford Bronco II disregarded a school bus stop sign and struck 16-year-old Minete Zeka, sending her body more than 100 feet in the air.
Defense attorney Louis Busico called her death "a horrific accident, not a crime."
He also argued that there was no sign at the intersection alerting drivers to the bus stop.
