Teen cited after crash injures 7 in New Castle
NEW CASTLE, Del. (WPVI) -- A teenage driver has been cited following a crash on Tuesday morning that left seven people injured.
Five of the victims are William Penn High School students, while another attends the Wallace Wallin School.
The crash happened just after 7:50 a.m. on Route 141 North near Route 13, about one mile from William Penn.
Police say the 16-year-old driver, a Wilmington resident, was driving a Ford Escape in the southbound lanes of Route 141 with five other teens in the vehicle.
For an unknown reason, the vehicle crossed the median and went into the northbound lanes, hitting a pickup truck head-on.
The driver of the pickup truck, 57-year-old Marshall Weeks, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The teen driver and his passengers were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
However, a 17-year-old girl was trapped in the wreckage for 45 minutes until she was finally freed by rescuers.
The teen driver was cited with Failure to Remain in a Lane of Travel, No Proof of Motor Vehicle Insurance, Expired Registration, and Driving without a Valid Operator's License.
