2 men struck and killed outside Dewey Beach restaurant

DEWEY BEACH, Del. (WPVI) -- Two men standing outside a restaurant were killed after police say a driver blacked out and crashed his SUV in Dewey Beach, Delaware.

It happened around 5 p.m. Saturday on Coastal Highway.

Delaware State Police said a 61-year-old man from New York was driving a Chevrolet Suburban when he suffered a medical issue causing him to black out behind the wheel.

The SUV crossed lanes and then headed for the Starboard Bar and Restaurant.

Police said two men from Washington, D.C., ages 53 and 58, who were standing outside the restaurant, attempted to move out of the path of the Chevrolet, but were unable to do so.

They were both struck by the front end of the vehicle.

The SUV also hit a utility pole, severing it at ground level. The vehicle then continued into the Starboard parking lot where it struck an unoccupied Jeep Wrangler, before coming to rest.

Both Washington D.C. men were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to Beebe Hospital for treatment. Police said neither impairment nor distraction is believed to be a factor in the crash.

No charges have been filed in this crash. The investigation is ongoing.
