WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) -- A truck driver has been cited for careless driving after a crash that shut down I-495 in Wilmington, Delaware for more than 3 hours.
The accident happened at 2:40 a.m. Friday on I-495 South near the 12th Street exit.
State police say the dump portion of a dump truck owned by James English Trucking of New Castle, Delaware was in an upright position and hit the underside of the 12th Street bridge overpass.
The impact caused the front end of the truck to detach from the trailer portion and crash through a median, landing in the oncoming northbound lanes.
The trailer portion flipped on its side and ended up blocking the southbound lanes.
The driver, 50-year-old David Strutton of Claymont, Delaware, was taken to Christiana Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Both sides of I-495 were shut down for nearly 3 hours as crews worked to remove both portions of the truck and clear the debris.
The northbound lanes reopened at 5:30 a.m. The southbound lanes were back open by 6:00 a.m.
