Thousands sign petition to make piercing a baby's ears illegal

Is it cute or is it cruel for a parent to pierce a baby's ears?

According to several thousand people in England, the answer is cruel.

In just under one week, nearly 36,000 have signed a petition to make piercing an infant or toddler's ears illegal in the UK.

Whether for cosmetic or cultural reasons, millions of new parents, including celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Gisele Bndchen, get their daughter's lobes pierced before their 1st birthday.

Pediatricians say there's little to no risk to the child if the piercing is performed carefully and cared for properly.

But the mother behind the campaign against piercing disagrees.

She says the practice inflicts severe pain and fear upon infants unnecessarily and only satisfies the parent's vanity.
