Best and worst bets for store cards

Whether you have store cards from major retailers or you have been tempted to sign up for one during checkout, we're breaking down your best and worst bets.

Some stores offer an incentive when you sign up for the card, like 15 or 20 percent off your purchases that day. And if you are making a big purchase, this can be a great same-day discount.

A recent survey by creditcards.com found that while you may save at the moment, you will pay more down the line.

They looked at the fine print on credit cards from the nation's largest retailers.

The average APR was roughly 23 percent - about 8 points higher than the average credit card.

Among those with the highest: the jeweler Zales, with a rate that's close to 29 percent.

Also high are Office Depot, Staples and Best Buy, with rates as high as 27 to 28 percent.

Among the lowest - Nordstrom and Brooks Brothers.

Of course if you pay the balance in full every month, you can avoid those rates and still enjoy the coupons and incentives.

Just be advised, the more cards you have, the more inquiries on your credit report, and that can put a dent in your credit score.
