Firefighters suffer minor injuries in Hoboken blaze

HOBOKEN, N.J. -- A fire ripped through at least two buildings along Hoboken's main business district Saturday night, leaving several responding firefighters with minor injuries.

Residents of the buildings were safely evacuated, according to NJ.com. The blaze was reported under control early Sunday morning.

Flames were seen coming from the top of a building at 507 Washington St. around 10 p.m. The fire also damaged a neighboring building.

Police Chief Ken Ferrante said an unspecified number of firefighters were injured as they fought the fire in brisk winds. He said the injuries were minor. A dispatcher at the Hoboken Fire Department declined to provide more information to the Associated Press.

The fire attracted the attention of dozens of nighttime revelers in a mile-square city across the Hudson River from midtown Manhattan that's known for its thriving nightlife. The fire also forced the shutdown of several blocks of the main business thoroughfare to accommodate numerous fire and police vehicles.

Daniel Vergara, a cameraman who happened to be walking in the neighborhood, said large numbers of firefighters and police officers were at the scene.

Hoboken is known as Frank Sinatra's birthplace.
