WASHINGTON -- Authorities are investigating an online threat against Howard University and its students.

In a message to the university community Thursday, President Wayne A. I. Frederick said school officials are aware of the threat and are working with local and federal law enforcement on the "serious matter." He says the school has increased security on campus and at local Metro stations. He urged the campus community to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity.

School spokesman Anthony Owens says that the threat was posted online Wednesday night and that the school learned about it through social media.

In a statement, the FBI Washington field office said it was aware of the online threat and had made the appropriate notifications.
