MIDDLETOWN, N.J. -- First responders rescued three people who somehow became stranded on ice in Middletown, New Jersey, Tuesday afternoon.
The incident happened near the end of Leonard Avenue in Sandy Hook Bay, and the dramatic rescue.
It is unclear how the victims ended up stuck about 60 feet out on the ice, but it appears they walked out onto what they thought was solid ice between two erosion barriers.
Rescuers were wading through the frigid and frozen waters to pull one of them, a 14-year-old girl who apparently went into the freezing mush. They put her on a sled and slowly pulled her through the water to dry land.
She was placed in a waiting ambulance to be evaluated and checked for hypothermia. She was taken to a local hospital.
The other two people, a teenage girl and an adult woman, were standing on a jetty, and responders brought them life jackets before they walked to safety. They are not believed to have required treatment.
