PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- For the members of Cub Scout Pack 243 in Ardmore, picking up the bags of donated food from porches is kind of like a scavenger hunt for a good cause.
The scouts went door to door Saturday morning, picking up the nonperishables and loading them into a truck, all in an effort to help the 6abc Dunkin' Donuts Holiday Food Drive.
"It's something we all should do. ... When you're able to do such a thing, and you bring your young kids up to start doing such a thing, it's always a good thing," said scoutmaster Steve Handy.
"It's good to give back to others, and be thankful for what you have," said scout Marchant Wiggins.
Last year, more than 883,000 meals were generated through food collections, online donations and the Dunkin' Donuts "Roast Hunger" campaign.
The scouts with Troop 147 have been doing this for years. They spent the day sorting donations at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Trinity in South Philadelphia, organizing the food before it heads to Philabundance.
Fifteen-year-old D.J. Brown said for him this is the perfect way to prepare for Thanksgiving.
"Doing your duty as a scout and as an American, just helping everybody out makes you feel good about yourself, and makes you feel good that you're able to help other people. That you're fortunate enough to do that," said Brown.
The food drive isn't over yet. The collections will continue during the Thanksgiving Day Parade, and you can donate online through the end of the year.
