UPS driver injured by gunfire in Chester, Delaware County
CHESTER, Pa. (WPVI) -- A UPS delivery driver was injured by gunfire in Chester, Delaware County on Friday.
It was shortly before 1:30 p.m. in the area of 10th and Highland when the UPS driver was grazed on the shoulder by a bullet.
The driver managed to drive himself to Murphy Ford, located in the 3300 block of Township Line Road, where he got help.
"He came in here because he knew it was safe. We always have police around because we service a lot of the Chester vehicles, and we take care of the paramedics," said Dan Murphy, the dealership owner.
Sure enough, the UPS driver's hunch was right - there was help already inside the dealership waiting.
"He came in and sure enough there was a paramedic here. Took him right in and took him up to the hospital," Murphy said.
Authorities say the victim is expected to be OK.
A spokesperson for UPS released the following statement to Action News:
"UPS is cooperating with authorities investigating an incident of a UPS driver grazed by a bullet early this afternoon in Chester, PA. We're grateful there was no serious injury to this experienced 13-year UPS driver. The safety of our personnel is our first priority, and UPS drivers are trained to be aware of their surroundings. The delivery helper riding with the driver was not injured. Packages are being transferred to another vehicle to complete service today."
At this point detectives say they don't think the UPS driver was the intended target, but rather got caught in crossfire.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
