A source tells Action News the driver who fatally struck a man in Northeast Philadelphia Tuesday morning was a police officer.

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A source tells Action News the driver who fatally struck a man in Northeast Philadelphia Tuesday morning was a police officer.

No charges have been filed and no further information on the driver is known at this time.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Cottman and Algon avenues.

Police say the victim, a 50-year-old man, ran out into the street and was struck.

Chopper 6 was over the scene after a pedestrian was hit by a car at the intersection of Cottman and Algon avenues in Northeast Philadelphia.

The victim was rushed to the hospital where he died a short time later.

The striking vehicle remained at he scene.

The view from Chopper 6 showed heavy damage to the vehicle's hood and windshield.
