Philly DA candidates hit the polls on Election Day

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Voters in Philadelphia head to the polls to cast their ballots and elect the city's next district attorney.

Republican Beth Grossman and Democrat Larry Krasner are vying to succeed former District Attorney Seth Williams; they, too, were out voting today, and encouraging others to do the same.

In his red Tesla, Democrat Larry Krasner left his polling place to get out the vote.

"We are going to be going out and meeting voters everywhere shaking hands," said Krasner.

A one-time public defender, Krasner has never been a prosecutor. He calls the DA's office broken and vows big changes.

Krasner is a critic of what he calls mass incarceration, which he says does not work. He said he will not pursue death sentences.

Krasner backs the idea of safe injection sites for heroin users and would like to see the use of cash bail scaled back and eventually eliminated.

The Action Cam caught up with Republican Beth Grossman after she voted and was talking to well-wishers.

For 21 years Grossman, has been an assistant DA in Philadelphia. Her campaign has focused on helping crime victims and how she used various legal tools as a prosecutor to shut down drug houses and nuisance bars.

Grossman said she too has concerns over high bails that discriminate against the poor. She said she will review the use of the death penalty if elected
