Philly police officers honored for service, heroism

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Dozens of Philadelphia police officers were honored Wednesday for their dedication to protecting and serving the community.

Awards for excellence, valor, bravery and heroism were handed out in the Heroes Ballroom in the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 in Northeast Philadelphia.

One award handed out was named after Officer Robert Wilson III, who was killed in the line of duty last year. Wilson drew fire from assailants during the robbery of a GameStop, saving store employees and customers.

"While we are extremely proud of what you've done to get you here today, we're equally proud of what you do each and every day," said Commissioner Richard Ross.

Among those honored was Officer Anthony Mirabella from the 22nd District. He and several fellow officers received a lifesaving award for their response to a shooting in January in Strawberry Mansion.

Dozens of Philadelphia police officers were honored Wednesday for their dedication to protecting and serving the community.

Doctors said the victim may have died if not for their efforts.

"We came on scene, a gentleman was shot multiple times. Applied a tourniquet to him on both of his legs, actually, and transported him to hospital," Mirabella said.

Mayor Jim Kenney was among the dignitaries on stage presenting the honors.

"It is an extremely difficult time to be a police officer in the United States of America. We recognize that, and we're trying to get our department through this period so you can do your jobs effectively and efficiently keeping our neighborhoods safe," Kenney said.

Some of these officers say they're doing their jobs and don't expect recognition, but they were proud to be at the ceremony.

"It's a real honor to be able to serve the city of Philadelphia and everybody in it," said Mirabella.

"A lot of times police get flak for negative things," said Sgt. James Tucker. "This is a really good event to snow there is a positive."
