BRICK TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Authorities have released the name of a man who was shot and killed by police outside a southern New Jersey home.
Ocean County prosecutors say 21-year-old Julian Hoffman, of Brick Township, appeared to have a black semi-automatic handgun when he approached two township officers Sunday night. The officers had responded to the home after a male caller told a 911 operator he was going to "create a disturbance" and then hung up.
Prosecutors identified the responding officers as 31-year-old Jay Nye and 25-year-old Ryan Osborn, who are assigned to the patrol division. Nye joined the force in September 2011; Osborn was hired in April 2013.
Officials have said Hoffman was shot several times, but it's unclear if one or both of the officers discharged their weapons. It's also not clear if Hoffman's weapon was real.
Authorities have not released further details on the shooting, citing the ongoing investigation.
Brick Police Chief Nils Bergquist Jr. said both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
