Deadline nears for LIHEAP heating assistance

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Consumers have one week left to apply for LIHEAP , the federal program that provides hundreds of dollars in heating assistance to eligible households.

The deadline to submit applications is next Friday, May 8.

The program is especially important for residents struggling with rising electricity and natural gas costs, according to officials.

"Income-eligible homeowners and renters can apply and receive a grant of up to $1,000 in free money," said Christina Clark of PGW.

The funds can be used for natural gas or electric bills and do not need to be repaid.

Clark emphasized the importance of applying before the deadline.

"How important is it that people get this money instead of leaving it on the table?" asked Nydia Han.

"I think it's really important because, as we know, one in three Philadelphia households are eligible. We know that this winter there were higher feeding bills, and therefore it's important that people who are eligible for this money are able to get it and access it," she responded.

Crisis assistance is also available for those facing more urgent situations.

"Customers without utility service or those who have received a 10-day shop notice can apply for both Crisis Assistance and LIHEAP together, and Crisis Assistance is an additional federal grant up to $1,000," Clark said.

Applicants must meet income requirements. For example, a family of four cannot have a household income above $48,225 per year.

Residents can apply through their electricity or natural gas provider's website, the Compass PA website, or by texting the word WARM to 77037.

Applications can also be submitted in person at more than a dozen neighborhood energy centers.

The future of LIHEAP remains uncertain.

The Trump Administration has continued to threaten to eliminate heating aid, and a proposed federal budget for 2027 removes the program.

However, funding remains in place for 2026.
