PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Thousands of volunteers will take part in the oldest and largest King Day of Service, while focusing on this year's theme of equity in education.
Temple University will serve as the headquarters for service projects happening around the tri-state area for the 31st annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker was joined Monday morning by local leaders, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
They helped out with the signature project of assembling what they call "Book Arks," self-standing structures that will offer free books to organizations in local and underserved communities.
Every year, there's a regional signature project led by thousands of volunteers from Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware.
They are honoring Dr. King's legacy of social justice by transforming this national holiday into a day where the everyday person takes action.
Events like this will be held across the tri-state area, tying into the overarching theme this year of highlighting Dr. King's commitment to civil rights through equity in education.
Free events will also be available for the public, including workshops, a kids carnival, a health and wellness fair, and a jobs and opportunity fair.
