PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Tony Award and Grammy Award-winning actor and performer Leslie Odom, Jr. is coming home next week to perform with the Philly Pops.
It's part of Villanova University's Pops in the Pavilion series, a concert benefiting student scholarships.
I spoke with Odom, Jr. about what fans can expect at the one-night-only show, his return to "Hamilton," and how Philly raised him for a career in the arts.
"Everything that I have done and continue to do is just a building block off of what I learned on the streets of Philadelphia," he says.
The East Oak Lane native was "Hamilton's" original Aaron Burr on Broadway, a role that won him a Tony Award in 2016.
On September 25, he's taking the stage with the legendary Philly Pops, and you can be in the room where it happens at Villanova University's Finneran Pavilion.
"It's a wonderful treat to come back," says Odom, Jr. "I've played with the Pops before, but we have a brand new show. There are some songs, of course, that we always do, like some of the 'Hamilton' tunes and some of the stuff from the albums that we've learned people really like. There's even some stuff that we're doing for the first time ever. I've got some things up my sleeve for Villanova. We have got to do it right!"
Odom, Jr. was bitten by the performing arts bug at an early age in Philadelphia.
He's an alumnus of Julia R. Masterman School and The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA). He performed with New Freedom Theatre and Philadanco, among other spots across the city.
"It's where I began," he says. "It's where I learned the rudiments, the fundamentals."
Odom, Jr. recalls seeing "RENT" at the Merriam Theater when he was in high school.
At 17 years old, just a few months later, he made his Broadway debut in that very same show. At our request, we just might hear something from that soundtrack!
It's been quite a year for Odom, Jr.
He reprised his role as Aaron Burr twice, first on Broadway and again in London's West End.
"It felt amazing," he says. "I said everything that I wanted to say this time. I had a ball!"
