Longtime 6abc host, community staple Wally Kennedy dies at 76 years old

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Wednesday marked a sad day for the 6abc family and many local TV viewers.

Wally Kennedy, a longtime host of 'AM Philadelphia' and 'AM Live' here at 6abc, has died. He was 76 years old.

Every morning for decades, Philadelphia viewers watched him host the show that covered everything from entertainment to true crime to the city's social scene.

Former 6abc reporter Amy Buckman reflected on working with Wally, her mentor, on 'AM Philadelphia.' She remembered how he conducted himself in interviews and how it brought out the best in their guests.

"He was an excellent listener. He would listen to the answers his subjects were giving. The interviews would become much more personal and much more open," she explained.

As the show evolved to 'Philly After Midnight,' Wally evolved too, bringing a late-night edge to the show.

In addition to the lighter fare, Wally often interviewed some of the biggest names in Philadelphia and beyond.

Wally spoke with comedian Rosie O'Donnell, the late John Ritter, and even Prince Albert of Monaco, whose mother -- Grace Kelly -- was a Philadelphia native.

6abc President and General Manager Bernie Prazenica remembered Wally as a significant force at Action News.

"Wally had a very distinctive voice and one that was unusually strong and easily remembered," he recalled.

Wally also hosted Inside Story, Sunday Live, and community parades like the Pulaski Day Parade.

After 20 years, Wally left 6abc in 2004 and went on to teach at Temple University. He continued to broadcast as well, delivering the news on KYW Newsradio.
