PA Turnpike to begin texting drivers about unpaid tolls despite previous warning about scams

We've been warned about turnpike text scams, but now, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission says it is launching a pilot program that will send legitimate texts to drivers about unpaid tolls.

Officials say they are proceeding cautiously due to those past text scams about tolls, including a warning issued in February.

The commission will start with a six-month trial period for the new text system, where customers receive advance notices about the change.

It argues that texting about unpaid tolls is faster and more convenient than mail.

Unpaid balances can lead to suspended vehicle registration, escalating fines, and legal action, according to the agency.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike uses an open road tolling, which uses a license plate tolling system, so drivers no longer have to stop at toll booths.

Officials encourage drivers to use E-ZPass, which can save nearly 50% on tolls.

The nex texting program starts on June 1.
