PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Plans are moving forward for a large-scale public sculpture inspired by Benjamin Franklin's 1754 "Join, or Die" cartoon, according to the Independence Historical Trust.

The trust said the proposed installation - designed by artist John Collins - would stretch 46 feet across Independence Mall near the Liberty Bell Center. The piece would be built from eight granite segments, representing the colonies Franklin urged to unite when he published the image in the Pennsylvania Gazette.

Organizers said the sculpture will be displayed in a fragmented form to symbolize unity through connection, echoing the original cartoon's message.

Jonathan Burton, director of development for the Independence Historical Trust, said the project aims to deepen visitors' understanding of the nation's origins. "It's not only the message of unity, but it's the beginning of our country, so it just helps complete the story," Burton said. "When people come to Philadelphia to learn about the birthplace of America, it happened all right here in Independence Hall."

Burton said the installation would offer another educational opportunity for the millions of people who visit the national park each year.

The trust said about $3 million has been raised through donations from the city, foundations and private philanthropists. Organizers hope to secure an additional $700,000 to complete the project.
