GLENSIDE, Pa. (WPVI) -- What started as a call for domestic violence at an apartment building in Glenside, Pa. turned into a deadly police shooting.
It happened at the Rosemore Gardens Apartments in the 2300 block of Rosemore Avenue around 11:15 a.m.
Police say a young girl called 911 when her mom's boyfriend pulled out a gun and fired the weapon. Officers were there within seconds.
"Officers heard an additional gunshot followed by screaming, and immediately entered the apartment where there was an adult female inside," said Chief Patrick Molloy of the Abington Twp. Police Department.
Police say officers broke down the door and two of them fired their weapons, hitting the male suspect. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"It's rare that we have to use deadly force, but in this case these officers followed all the protocols and the training with regard to what they believed was a hostage rescue," said Molloy.
Neither the woman inside nor the child were hurt.
The officers involved are now on administrative leave, but police say they're grateful for the outcome and that the mother and child are safe.
"I'm so grateful because our number one priority when we put on a uniform, a badge, and a gun when we come to work each day is to protect innocent lives," said Molloy.
Since this is a police-involved shooting Montgomery County district attorney's office is investigating.
They have not released the identity of the suspect or of the officers.
