St. Joseph's University graduates launch 'Kind Stranger' project to help neighbors in need

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Four Saint Joseph's University graduates are offering free or pay-what-you-wish help across the city.

Since launching 10 days ago, they've been responding to dozens of requests from residents seeking support with everyday tasks.

Alex Andahazy said people often question whether the group is legitimate.

"I hope this can confirm we are real people, it is as real help as we can give." he said.

The friends have opened their direct messages and email to anyone requesting what they call a "Kind Stranger."

So far, they've completed more than 15 jobs, including house cleaning, preparing a comfortable space for someone returning home from the hospital, moving assistance and site surveys.

They say the goal is to build community through simple acts of support.

Carter Karpinski said many people they've met are overwhelmed by their circumstances.

"We've met people who say, 'Life has gotten in the way of me being able to keep my living space clean.' I just want help with that," he said. "I understand how it feels to be overwhelmed and feel like you can't ask for help and you're alone, and that's been the primary goal for me."

The group has discovered that others are eager to help as well.

With only four "kind strangers" available, they hope to eventually connect volunteers with residents who need assistance.

They've already received nearly 200 requests and say they are working toward forming a nonprofit.
