WILMINGTON, Del. (WPVI) -- Firefighters battled a blaze at the Frederick Douglass Stubbs Elementary School in Wilmington, Delaware.
The fire broke out just before 8:30 a.m. Monday at 1100 North Pine Street.
A search of the second floor found smoke and large amounts of water in the hallway.
Inside a classroom, an activated sprinkler head with the fire suppressed was located.
Fire crews quickly worked to secure the isolation valves of the sprinkler system to reduce the water damage.
The water damaged the adjacent classrooms and leaked through the ceiling to other classrooms.
There were no students or staff inside the building.
The situation was placed under control.
Students were relocated temporarily to Howard High School of Technology on the 400 block of East 12th Street. They were dismissed from that school at 9:45 a.m.
The Stubbs school will remain closed for the remainder of the day.
School officials say they will make a decision this afternoon on whether the school will reopen tomorrow.
Parents with questions should contact the Christiana School District at 302-429-4175.
The fire marshal is investigating the cause.
