CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- The number one killer in Philadelphia, is smoking cigarettes, according to Mayor Jim Kenney.

He says it causes 2 thousand deaths a year in the city.

Wednesday, he announced a new proposal to reduce that number.

Officials want to cut the number of stores that sell tobacco products in low income neighborhoods, and near schools.

The health department would also visit stores more often to make sure they're not selling to children.

The regulations still need approval from city council.
