Uber is legal in Philadelphia throughout summer

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Uber has struck a deal with Philadelphia to operate legally in the city throughout the summer.

Officials with the ride sharing service and the Philadelphia Parking Authority were on hand for the announcement Thursday.

The deal was prompted by the recent disruption in SEPTA's Regional Rail service and the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

Before, Uber was being fined for operating without the proper permits.

But those infractions will not be enforced until after September 30th.

Officials say that with so many visitors coming into the city, everyone, including taxi drivers, stand to make big profits.

"Uber has been operating, this is an agreement; it really doesn't affect anything other than us enforcing it. Cab drivers might not be happy, but this is a free market," PPA Executive Director Vince Fenerty said.

There is proposed legislation in Harrisburg to allow Uber to operate legally in Philadelphia, but it has not yet passed.
