Police ready for Nova post-game celebrations

BRYN MAWR (WPVI) -- Villanova fans will gather on and near the campus Monday night to cheer on their Wildcats. But whether the game ends with a title or a broken heart, police want everyone to stay safe.

Fans lined up outside Kelly's Taproom on Lancaster Avenue for hours on Monday, waiting to get into one of the go-to spots for Villanova students. And right across the street, keeping a watchful eye, are Lower Merion police.

Local, state, and federal police will be deployed in the area Monday night. They are prepared for whatever happens after the game.

Mike Florio is a Villanova senior, who tells us, "It's gonna be so crazy. I can't imagine how awesome it's gonna be, because Saturday night was awesome."

On Saturday night students flooded the streets and several were arrested following Villanova's commanding win over Oklahoma.

"I was here on Saturday," says senior Alec Freidof. "As soon as they won, it was a big 44 point win. Everybody rushed into the streets. There were people hanging from telephone poles. It was absolute madness."

Radnor Police Lt. Chris Flanagan says, "What they have to remember is that if it's a crime when there's not a championship game - it's still a crime.)

Radnor Township police will operate a command center inside their headquarters. They'll monitor the game, and activity out on the streets.

Lt. Flanagan explains, "We have federal agents, Delaware County District Attorney's Office, Septa PD, Amtrak PD, Villanova Public Safety's main dispatch will come out of here."

State police will deploy mounted units, a helicopter, and motorcycle units. We also spotted crews greasing light poles to make them more difficult to climb.

At Kelly's Taproom, they've ordered extra food, drink, and security.

Angie Mitchell, owner of Kelly's Taproom Owner: "We've hired extra bouncers. I outsourced them this time as well. We have a really good relationship with Lower Merion Police, so we have them on speed dial if we need anything."

Radnor police said they want to see a win too. They also want everyone to celebrate it responsibly.

Authorities are asking those going out to watch the game to pick a designated driver and a transportation plan ahead of time.

Police anticipate closing roads, including access to and from the Blue Route as the end of the game approaches.
