Water was shut off to nearly 3 dozen homes in South Philadelphia after a 6-inch water main broke.

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A water main break affected service to a number of properties in South Philadelphia Tuesday.

The Philadelphia Water Department responded to the 300 block of Cross Street, where they spotted a hole in the ground and reported water running beneath and the street appearing to collapse.

Officials say the water was coming from a broken 6-inch main.

Service to the main was shut off so that crews could begin repairs. It was restored around 4:00 p.m.

The break caused the basements of at least two residents living along Cross Street to be washed out.

Residents say the flooding into their homes is an ongoing problem.

"I came down this morning, heard a rushing noise, looked in the basement and there was about 6 to 8 inches of water," resident Kenneth Green said.

"We have the same problem; we have about a foot and a half of water continuously coming in," resident Ray Castineira said.

The Water Department says there is someone on site to assist property owners with damage claims.

Ray Castineira says something needs to be done-and that he's raised his concerns with the city for weeks.

"We've called the city for a month now. I have all the 311 numbers. I've been calling, they haven't really addressed it all. I've been calling every day since then and they really haven't done anything that I know of," Castineira said.
