Woman, police officer injured in separate shootings in Camden, N.J.

CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) -- A police officer was hospitalized and a 29-year-old woman critically injured in separate shootings overnight in Camden.

Investigators say the woman was shot just after 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the 200 block of South 27th Street.

The victim was driving towards Benson Avenue, when it appears she was caught in a crossfire.

Police say the 29-year-old woman was shot in the back then lost control of her vehicle, crashing into a tree.

Medics rushed the woman to Cooper University Hospital in critical condition.

Police took the woman's boyfriend into custody at the scene. He was allegedly one of the gunmen.

A second suspect was located after he turned up at Kennedy Hospital in Cherry Hill, New Jersey with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

That person was later transferred to Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

Sources say all three are well known to law enforcement.

Two hours earlier, a police officer was injured in a shooting on Park Boulevard near Haddon Avenue.

It happened at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday as the officer was on patrol.

Someone opened fire on the officer, who was in plainclothes and in an unmarked car as part of a detail trying the stop the violence in the city's Parkside section.

The officer spotted some suspicious activity and suddenly he told investigators a suspect, who remains at large, opened fire.

District attorney spokesman Dan Keashen explains, "He was hit by a bullet fragment that entered the car out of the six rounds, two of the individual rounds hit the car and blew out the back window."

He was treated for cuts at Cooper University Hospital and released.

Police have some leads on the officer's assailant, but they would appreciate more information from the public. If you can help, you are asked to contact investigators.
