Clifford Pettus is charged with two counts of first-degree rape, one count of sexual solicitation of a child and related offenses.
Court records say a mother of a 5-year-old child went to police last week after overhearing Pettus talk to another child about a sexual assault.
Pettus was charged Friday and ordered held at Sussex Correctional Institution on $113,500 bail.
Police said they plan to interview more children at the Shell's 4 Recreation Center day care.
Investigators say a criminal background check was performed before Pettus was hired and nothing was found.
