Police investigate Berks mother-daughter hangings

State police in Berks County no longer believe that the hanging deaths of a 5-year-old girl and her mother was a murder-suicide. Authorities now believe 22-year-old Duceliz Diaz and her daughter, Kayla, were murdered.

The bodies were discovered Jan. 15. Relatives found them hanged in the second-floor apartment where they lived in Bernville.

Troopers initially called it a murder-suicide. But police now say they think both were murdered and the investigation continues.

Last week, the Berks County coroner ruled the mother's death a homicide. He had ruled the girls death a homicide almost immediately.
