Elderly couple killed in NJ fire

SOUTHAMPTON TWP, N.J. - February 17, 2008 The blaze at 8 Westminster Drive in Leisuretown was reported at about 4:30 in the morning. A neighbor heard popping noises and when she looked out she saw the awful sight.

80-year-old William H. Crandall and his wife, 78-year-old Lisbeth Crandall lived in the small one story house, which was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Knowing that there were people inside, members of the Vincent Fire Company went into the burning house to try and rescue the elderly couple... it was not to be.

Leisuretown is an over 55 community in the New Jersey Pine Barrens of Burlington County. The victims had lived there for about 14 years.

State police arson experts are conducting the investigation into the cause of the fire. They say the blaze started in the garage of the home. At this point they could not determine if the home had working smoke detectors.
