Director Charles Hayward says parents using the state's discounted testing program could save more than $300.
Aside from helping to resolve child support cases, Hayward says knowing the paternity of a child is valuable for other reasons, including family medical history, and in claiming inheritance or Social Security benefits.
Resolving a higher number of paternity claims would also make the state eligible for a greater share of available federal funds. About half the state agency's funds come from the federal Administration for Children and Families' Office of Child Support Enforcement.
