Posh art gallery owner arrested for selling booze

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) - May 26, 2008

Village police led gallery owner Ruth Vered away in handcuffs on Sunday after she refused to stop serving drinks. She was charged with selling alcohol without a liquor license.

Vered calls the treatment by the police "disgraceful." The 67-year-old told them she had been serving liquor "since before they were born." Mayor Paul Rickenbach says police were just doing their job.

Vered was throwing a Memorial Weekend bash to celebrate her latest exhibit of celebrity photographs of Madonna, Justin Timperlake, Angelina Jolie and others.

One guest called the arrest a "gross overreaction."
