Baby left in hot car dies days later

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - June 14, 2008 Nicholas McCorkel died Saturday at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he had been taken Tuesday after he was left in the sweltering car.

Police say the baby's grandfather, 59-year-old Edward Kanterman of Lansdowne, picked up the child at his daughter's home and planned to drop him off at day care. But he forgot and drove to work instead and didn't realize his mistake until he returned to his car to go home.

The baby's mother, Rebecca Kanterman, told KYW-TV on Saturday that her father made a terrible mistake and is extremely remorseful. She said she doesn't want her father charged with a crime. But that decision is up to Delaware County prosecutors.
